e-Chaine

10 March 2005

Cher Baillis Delegues,

2005 is certainly shaping up to be an active and exciting year for the Chaine. In order to keep you and your Confreres informed and updated on the developments, news and events within the Chaine, we are delighted to introduce an e-newsletter which will allow us to communicate with you on a regular basis.

One of our major Chaine calendar events this year is the annual ASSEMBLEE GENERALE which will be held in DEAUVILLE, FRANCE from 17-19 JUNE.

To help and assist you with your planning for this event, we have put together some useful information and links as follows:

DEAUVILLE

Deauville, founded by the Duc de Morny in 1861, is about 200 kilometres from Paris. This charming seaside resort located on the coast of Normandy can be reached from Paris by car or train. Travelling time by car or train is about 2 hours. A good website for information on Deauville is www.deauville.org

How to Get There

Rental Car

The 3 main rental car companies, Hertz, Avis and Europcar have pick-up and drop-off facilities at the 2 main airports in Paris, Roissy Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY). They also have locations at the major Paris train stations such as Gare du Nord, Gare Montparnasse and Gare de Lyon. Bookings can be made over the internet by visiting: www.hertz.com, www.avis.com, www.europcar.com, by telephone (in your home country) or via a travel agent.

If leaving from Paris by car take the A13. You will also need to pay toll fares.

Train

The French rail company, SNCF, operates train services from Gare St Lazare train station (in central Paris) to Deauville-Trouville. There are direct trains (about 3-4 times per day) but some also require a change at Lisieux. From Deauville-Trouville station you can take a taxi to your hotel (takes 5-15 minutes). For schedules, prices and reservations visit www.sncf-voyages.com

Gare St Lazare can be reached by either taxi or train (RER B) and then metro from both Paris CDG and Paris ORY airports.

Venue

The General Assembly (Assemblee Generale) events and activities will take place at the Casino Barriere located right next to the hotel Normandy Barriere. This hotel is linked to the casino by an underground passageway, and the Royal Barrière hotel is also nearby, situated about 200 metres/500 yards from the Casino.

Accommodation

Deauville is not only popular as a coastal leisure resort but also as a venue for meetings and conventions. It is strongly recommended that you make hotel bookings well in advance.

What to Do and See: Optional, Organised Tours and Sightseeing

There is plenty to do and see in and around Deauville. Conveniently located on the Normandy coast between the Cote Fleurie and the Pays d'Auge, Deauville is a destination like none other: a true blend of tradition and luxury. It is also an ideal base for discovering the surrounding regions. Here are some sightseeing tips and ideas:

Organised Tours, Sightseeing and Leisure Activities

The Bailliage de France has been very active in arranging some optional, organised tours with English-speaking guides. These are as follows:

- Normandy Landing Beaches (Friday, 17 June). This will be a full-day tour with lunch included.

- Honfleur and the Normandy Bridge (Saturday, 18 June). This is a morning tour which includes a visit to Honfleur, a lovely picturesque fishing port once frequented by the Impressionists.

- ‘Coeur de Lion Distillery’ visit, Saturday 18 June. This afternoon tour is for lovers of ‘Calvados’, the famous French apple brandy made from Normandy apples.

(Prices of the optional tours will be included in the Assemblee Generale Programme information pack).

Other sightseeing and leisure activities:

- Just a few minutes away from Deauville there are also numerous places of interest and leisure centres to suit all tastes. There is a lot of choice, from horse racing to jet skiing, golf, flying over the beauty spots of the Calvados in a helicopter, or hot air balloon rides...not forgetting of course, a relaxing stop at Deauville's thalassotherapy centre.

- Caen, the town of William the Conqueror, can be easily reached by bus from Deauville (takes about 1 hour).

- For those of you with a car, Mont Saint-Michel, the very famous medieval abbey, would take a full-day but would be a ‘once in a life time’ experience.

We would like to see as many of you as possible at the Assemblee Generale and hope that this information will greatly assist you and your Confrèries in your planning and preparation for this event.

We very much appreciate your support, which will be vital in cascading news and information onto the Confrères in your Bailliages, and to also encourage them to contact and advise us of their email address changes. Our aim is to communicate to as many Confrere as possible who would like to receive regular email Newsletter updates.

We welcome your input, comments and feedback, which will be pertinent to improving and evolving the communication links between us.
